The Origins of Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment is one of the oldest healing techniques in the world, and one of our most effective natural remedies for a variety of aches and pains, illnesses, and conditions. It originated in China over 5,000 years ago and is still a widely used method for pain relief and healing.

The process stimulates natural healing in the body by inserting thin needles into specific areas known as “acupuncture points.” By putting pressure on these points, which are connected to nerve paths, blood vessels, and lymphatic channels, the body begins to heal naturally. During the process, the brain releases positive chemicals such as endorphins that make you feel good and enkephalins that relieve pain.

Acupuncture needles are sterile, disposable, and safe. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as a safe and effective treatment for a variety of illnesses, ailments, and injuries. When performed by a professional, the treatment provides both immediate and long-term healing.

Our team at Dalhousie Health and Wellness is highly educated and experienced in providing acupuncture treatment for a variety of conditions. We will sit down with you and go over your situation, assessing every aspect of your health and wellbeing.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Medical Acupuncture

At Dalhousie Health and Wellness, we practice two types of acupuncture: traditional Chinese acupuncture and medical acupuncture.

While they seem similar, there are notable differences between the two practices, and understanding those differences can help make the best choice in your healing journey. Our team of professionals are always ready to talk to you and go through those options to provide the best solution for your situation.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

The human body is made up of a variety of meridians — sets of pathways that help channel your body’s energy, controlling your balance, function, and wellbeing. Each pathway is associated with a different organ, with 12 in total.

In traditional Chinese acupuncture, these energy flows are known as the “Qi,” and the goal of treatment is to restore and rejuvenate your Qi. Combined with the use of herbs and dietary changes, Chinese acupuncture can help to eliminate disease patterns, balance body function, and strengthen your core vitality. Some of the most important tools for diagnostics include tongue and pulse assessments, which help to determine healing progress and course of action.

Medical Acupuncture

In Western medicine, acupuncture is used for pain relief for a variety of conditions, from treating migraines and concussions to anesthesia for surgical procedures. The benefit of medical acupuncture is the pain relief combined with the ability to heal the mind and body at the same time.

Medical acupuncture is based on anatomy and physiology to determine a course of pain relief. It is often used in physical therapy to help people recover from serious injuries, pinched nerves, or chronic conditions. As an added benefit, many medical acupuncture patients experience a significant decrease in stress and anxiety levels.

Our Acupuncture Specialties

Providing acupuncture services for a variety of issues and ailments

There are a variety of issues and ailments with which acupuncture can help, and we specialize in many of these areas here at our Niagara clinic. If you are suffering from any of the following issues, acupuncture may be an effective solution for you. Our team will work with you to determine the best course of action and determine the root cause of your pain or illness instead of simply making the pain go away.

Acupuncture for Fertility

If you are trying to get pregnant, or struggling with an irregular menstrual cycle, acupuncture can help you. It can also be beneficial for those who are pregnant and looking for natural ways to maintain their baby’s health until they deliver. We will meet with you to discuss your individual situation and provide professional medical recommendations, but generally we recommend 1-2 acupuncture treatments per week for 3 cycles. This provides a variety of benefits, including enhancing the uterine lining, increasing egg and sperm quality, and maintaining overall hormonal balance.

Migraine and Headache Remedy

Acupuncture can be an excellent source of natural healing for migraines and headaches. By triggering the acupuncture points that control nerve flow, the body begins to feel natural pain relief and calming. When combined with chiropractic care and massage therapy, chronic migraine sufferers can begin to experience less migraines per month and reduced pain levels when those migraines occur.

Smoking Cessation

Using acupuncture to quit smoking is one of the less common methods, but it is known to be effective without the use of nicotine or chemical products. Acupuncture can help smokers reduce cravings by targeting pressure points that are connected to the body’s brain signals associated with addiction, such as in the ears. Those who use acupuncture to quit smoking also experience added benefits of better sleep, more energy, and no weight gain, which is a common side effect of prescription smoking aids. Generally, we recommend 1-2 sessions per week for 8 weeks.
