The plantar fascia is a dense piece of connective tissue that helps support the arch of the foot. When the plantar fascia becomes overstretched/overworked pain can occur causing a condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is commonly described as foot pain in the heel and arch of the foot. The pain is typically experienced upon weight bearing after resting. The discomfort is commonly described at its worst in the morning, with the first few steps out of bed.
The Cause of Plantar Fasciitis
There are many factors that can lead to plantar fasciitis: low arches; poorly fitting shoes; tension in the calf; decreased range of motion at the ankle; poor running technique and weak intrinsic foot muscles. It is common in runners and people that are on their feet for prolonged periods of time.
