Chiropractic treatment is a health care treatment that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on your general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back and neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs and headaches.
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and chiropractic treatment. Chiropractor physicians have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. At Dalhousie Health and Wellness in St Catharines Ontario, we combine our knowledge of Chiropractic and Naturopathic medicine to provide you with the best possible drug-free care.
The most common therapeutic procedure treated by chiropractic specialists is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called a “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement as a result of an injury. Such injury can be caused by an event, such as lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and soft tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
Chiropractic treatments and adjustments may rarely causes some discomfort. However, patients that experience mild soreness or aching following treatment will usually feel better within 12 to 48 hours. In majority of cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care can be a helpful method of treatment.
